Why We Keep Asking Questions: The Story Behind Our Podcast + YouTube Channel
Why do we keep asking questions in agriculture? Discover the story behind the Feeders Grain & Farm Supply podcast and YouTube channel, where education, industry expertise, and curiosity help livestock owners make informed decisions.
The Feeders Grain Team
Corning, Iowa
There is one question that seems to come up over and over again in agriculture: Why? Why do we feed this instead of that? Why does one animal need something different from another? Why has our family always done it this way? Why is there suddenly a new product, technology, supplement, or recommendation to consider?
That curiosity is a big part of why I started recording podcasts and YouTube videos through Feeders Grain & Farm Supply. At the heart of it all is education. I want to keep learning, but I also want to bring our customers along with me. There is always something new happening in livestock production, animal nutrition, technology, products, management practices, and research. Instead of pretending we already know everything, I would rather keep asking questions and find the people who can help us answer them.
It Started With Our Vendors
When I first started thinking about these recordings, one of my goals was to introduce people to the companies behind the products we carry. Many of the vendors we work with are businesses much like ours. They care about their customers, quality, and building products that serve a purpose.
I wanted customers to understand why we chose certain vendors and why certain products earned a place in our store. But as the recordings continued, I realized the conversation could be much bigger than that. Not every episode needed to be about something sitting on a shelf at Feeders Grain. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer is information.
There Is a Lot of Information Out There
Social media has given farmers, livestock owners, and homesteaders access to more information than ever before. That can be incredibly helpful, but it can also be confusing. You can ask one livestock question online and receive twenty completely different answers.
Some answers come from years of experience. Some come from professionals. And some simply come from someone who is very confident in their answer. Those are not always the same thing.
That is why I try to bring knowledgeable people into these conversations. I want to hear from professionals, vendors, nutrition experts, and others who spend their careers working in these industries. The goal is to give people reliable information they can actually use.
The Answer Usually Starts With Another Question
One of the things we see all the time at the store is how difficult it can be to answer a livestock question without knowing the entire situation. Someone might ask, “What hog feed should I use?” That sounds simple, but then we need to know more. What are you raising the hogs for? Are they breeding stock? Are they market animals? What is the end goal?
The same thing happens with cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens. Even raising chickens can look completely different depending on whether you have layers, broilers, or young chicks. There is rarely one universal answer. Good livestock management starts with understanding the animal, the environment, and the goal.
Learning Does Not Stop When You Own a Feed Store
One of my favorite parts of this industry is that there is always something else to learn. Research continues, products change, and technology develops. Sometimes someone walks through the door with a product or idea that makes me stop and think, “That is really interesting.”
That immediately creates more questions. How does it work? How could someone incorporate it into an operation? What does it cost? Is the result worth the input? Because livestock ownership is not just about finding the newest thing. Every decision has to make sense for the operation.
You Do Not Need a Huge Operation to Ask Good Questions
You do not have to run a massive livestock operation to belong in these conversations. Maybe you have five chickens in your backyard. Maybe you are starting a small homestead. Maybe your family has raised cattle for generations. Maybe you are completely new to livestock and still figuring things out.
All of those people have questions, and all of those questions matter. There is nothing wrong with learning as you go. The important part is finding reliable resources and being willing to keep learning.
That Is Why We Keep Recording
Being in front of the camera is not necessarily my favorite thing. It took some courage to sit down, hit record, and start talking. But I keep doing it because I believe these conversations can help someone.
If one podcast answers a question, introduces someone to a better resource, or helps a livestock owner understand why they are making a certain decision, then the recording did what it was supposed to do.
I am not here to claim I know everything. I want Feeders Grain & Farm Supply to be a place where we can keep figuring things out together. We will keep asking questions, talking with people who know their industries, and learning about new products, research, and technology.
Whether your operation includes five backyard chickens or a much larger livestock operation, we are here to help you learn, ask questions, and find the information you need.
Have a question or topic you would like us to cover in a future podcast or video? Let us know. Your question might just become our next conversation.
